Two quiet ways to paint with plain water, in one gift. The Water Easel stands on the kitchen table for smaller pictures. The Water Canvas rolls out along the floor for the big ones. Every stroke fades as it dries, so there's nothing to clean up and nothing to keep.

In the set

  • Little Otter Water Easel, Large: board (about 30 × 24 cm), stand with a built-in water well, and a bamboo brush
  • Little Otter Water Canvas: canvas on wooden rods with a hanging cord (about 140 × 35 cm), 6 brushes and 20 wooden stencils

Why it makes a good gift

  • Paints with water only. No paint, no ink, nothing to stain
  • Small enough for the table, big enough for two painters on the floor
  • Wooden stencils give younger hands a shape they're proud of
  • The easel packs away flat and the canvas rolls up small

Bought separately, the easel and canvas come to $149.90. Together they're $129.95, with free tracked delivery.

The easel and canvas are sent separately, so they may arrive on different days.

Ages 3+. Not suitable for children under 3 years. Adult supervision recommended.

No mess

Plain water and nothing else. No ink, no paint, no pens that dry out. Nothing to wash out of clothes or scrub off the table.

No clutter

It stands on the table and packs away flat in seconds. When the painting stops, the room goes back to being a room.

Nothing runs out

Water is the only thing it uses. No pens, pads or paint to buy again, and it resets for another go in minutes.

A hand paints a wavy line onto the board with the bamboo brush, using only water

Water in, art out

Dip the brush in plain water and paint straight onto the board. Strokes darken as it wets, hold while they work, then fade back to blank as it dries. It's ready to start over in a few minutes, as many times as they like.

Quiet, without a screen

Somewhere between drawing and calligraphy practice. It holds attention the way a book does rather than the way a screen does, and it's absorbing enough that brothers and sisters will want a turn.

Seen from above, a child sits beside the board laid flat on a wooden floor, with the stand and brush next to it

When they're done, it packs away and the room looks just the way it did before.
